Leadership is critical. The ability to guide, influence and have others follow you, carries great responsibility.
In a way we are all leaders, we all have people we can influence, encourage and even inspire. How many of us can point to family members who quietly led and influenced us often through their example and service.
In M&A the biggest single issue on a buyers mind when contemplating an acquisition is,” who will run this company when we own it?” The current leader is often stepping down and succession comes sharply into focus around a deal.
Many owners say to us, “oh I am not really needed anymore.” Rarely is this actually the case, often owners underestimate how critical and valuable they are to the successful running of the companies they have often founded and now need or wish to leave.
Buyers know this, it pays to not fudge it, in our experience it’s better to tackle it head-on. There are multiple ways to be creative around transition, the right buyer will go to work with you on developing something that works for everyone.
If you are thinking about succession and how best to start the process, talk to one of my team – we might be able to add something to your own thinking.
“A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.”-Jim Rohn
